Nicholas placed first overall in the 16-19 years sprint series against competitors from around NSW.
The Young High School student has competed in the sprint series - consisting of a 750 metre swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run - for the past three months during which time he has attended five of the eight events.
He competed at Canberra with a time of one hour 24 minutes, Wollongong in one hour 18 minutes, Batemans Bay in one hour 27 minutes and most recently Port Stephens on May 21 in one hour 17 minutes.
Nicholas’ mum, Jodie, said it’s a difficult sport as each course differs significantly to the last.
“Batemans Bay was a fairly tough course, so was Port Stephens, while Canberra was a flatter kind of track which was good, but you’re never on the same track which makes you work harder,” she said.
As a result of Nicholas’ consistent placings he found himself on the leaderboard and, while having no expectations of his first year in the sport, took out first place by one point.
Nicholas and his family were thrilled with the result.
“We were so excited because these kids compete all the time and this is just his first season doing it,” Jodie said.
“He had no expectations out of the series other than to better each time and build on it.
“He’s so deserving because he tries so hard and never expects anything big but is always happy with his end results.”
Nicholas first discovered his interest in swimming in Year 6 when, according to Jodie, he jumped in the pool and went straight from school competitions to state level. And only a short 12 months ago he found his passion for cycling.
“He’s the type of kid that’ll have a go at something and give it his best, he doesn’t care where he comes in, as long as he’s finished,” Jodie said.
Nicholas now has his sights set on road racing cycling in 2017, as well as more triathlons.
