Sporting and recreational events that were planned mostly went ahead, not the least being the popular Wombat swap meet and the Henry Lawson Festival at Grenfell.

The previous weekend caused numerous cancellations, but thankfully not the Young Poultry Show at the Young Showground.

This yearly Poultry Club event is separate to Young's Annual Show and attracts exhibitors from distances as far away as northern NSW and Victoria.

A small but dedicated team of poultry fancier, many of whom have been associated with the running of the annual show for many years, prepare and cages for many hundreds of birds that are sent to be judged.

The club, within a club, is a non-profit organisation that relies entirely on voluntary contributions for staging the event and providing prizemoney.

With that said, the burden of a $250 bill for use of the kitchen and an $80 bill for use of the actual facility (Stan Low Pavilion)  plus electricity and water could eventually sound the death knell for another worthwhile and long standing tradition.

Let's hope that the move to an alternate venue does not transpire like the pony club covered arena, dressage club to Bendick Murrell, and kennel club to Harden, we need these activities to continue to ensure the future viability of the showground.

Unfortunately there are winners and losers, Young Poultry Club is in talks with Young Lions Club to provide refreshments that will in turn provide some income, instead of outgoings to the long standing organisers.

Young and Boorowa branches of Can Assist are delighted to have the 2016 The Land Sydney Royal Easter Show Showgirl winner, Grenfell born Grace Eppelston as a special guest on Sunday, July 3, at Young Services Club.

Activity around the CBD continues with the end of the financial year almost upon us. Under The Arches on the corner of Boorowa and Main street are winding down their activities, the former Frank Mitchell jewellery outlet in the Schmitt Chambers has been an iconic outlet for the townspeople of Young for many years.

In years gone by the long walk upstairs to the surgery of dentist Norman Mason was something not to look forward to. Also, The Military Researcher will retreat to higher ground in coming weeks, while the cryptic clues continue. All I can say at this point is that the “Empire Strikes Back”, advance Australia Fair!.

There is a petition doing the rounds at the moment to formally request that Hilltops Council consider, as a matter of urgency, removing and replacing the deteriorating footpath adjacent to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ripon street. Already over five hundred signatures have been gathered, with many more expected, to formally request our new Administrator, Ms Wendy Tuckerman fast track the upgrade as a priority.

Public safety should always be a deciding factor in facilitating such a request.
