The Young Services Club auditorium was packed to the brink on Friday as 280 people filled the room for what Robert describe as a fun afternoon.

In typical style John Patterson as MC had the crowd in fits of laughter, while guest speakers Wendell Sailor and Kevin Neal also brought an informative touch to the day.

Careful not to give too much away – as strictly instructed by Nick Hall in “what happens at the luncheon stays at the luncheon” – Robert said the Q&A with Wendell was the standout. 

A range of topics were covered during the session.

“He was very honest, very frank, he spoke about his time in rugby union and league and all the ups and downs of his playing career,” Robert said.

Fellow guest speaker Kevin Neal informed the crowd on his time with the Canberra Raiders, as well as his connection with Australia’s swimming team as they competed in the Olympics.

While a final figure is yet to be released, Robert said funds raised exceed that of last year’s luncheon.

A large chunk of money raised came as a result of the highest auction item – a round of golf with Wendell and Steve Menzies for six people, donated by Wendell himself – won at a bid of $2600.

“That was above and beyond, he didn’t have to donate that, it was an extra,” Robert said.

Robert said next year’s luncheon will be run to a similar style, with a guest speaker and date yet to be confirmed.

“I think we’ve hit on a really good market and they just love it – the meal was great, entertainment was great, venue, and I think they all love having Friday arvo off,” Robert said.

He extended his appreciation to the Young Services Club for their contribution, as well as everyone who attended the luncheon. Patterson and Hall also earned a pat on the back for their entertaining input to the evening, who Robert said are already booked in for 2017.
