Christian Democratic Party (CDP) candidate and ardent opponent of gay marriage, Philip Langfield, has unexpectedly claimed “we have to accept scientists sometimes”.
“It must be proven it's beneficial, otherwise we wouldn't be supporting it,” Mr Langfield said.
“I certainly don't approve of drugs on the street, but this is medicine and used under medical supervision.”
But Mr Langfield has not softened his stance on the definition of marriage, claiming gay nuptials would “change the foundation of our nation”.
“I have nothing against homosexuals, but they cannot produce a family.”
