The 142.8mm of rain in June – as of June 29 – has left Young’s ovals in a poor state, with clubs forced to cancel training sessions or postpone rounds.
While some clubs have resumed training this week, acting director of infrastructure, Dirk Wymer, said council’s field managers have indicated their preference of grounds being left to recover.
“Our current procedure is to not close grounds if possible and to leave it up to the clubs to use their discretion,” Wymer said.
Young Lions Soccer Club has been affected by the rain, with president Paul Cameron confirming alternate plans are in place to allow the town comp to recommence this weekend.
“We have serious issues with our drainage at Young which is really unfortunate because we’ve had two really nice weekends where she should have been able to play but the grounds are just too wet down at Gus Smith,” he said. “We have a duty of care to look after our fields and our players.”
It’s the same story at junior league where president Nick Hall said the safety of players and condition of fields are priority.
“We’re not too dissatisfied at all, we’re happy at junior league,” Hall said.
“We have a very supportive council and I think Ted and all his team have been doing a good job.”
