The Under 16s took on Wagga Brothers who’d previously beaten Young 36-16 earlier in the year, but the ‘Pickers had other things in mind this time around.
Young came out whips cracking, attacking Brothers’ line and within three minutes powerhouse second rower, Brady Halls, burrowed his way over the line.
Young crossed again in the 18th minute when Jayden Cutting was left in open space before popping the ball to Halls who ran 40m to score his second try of the game. Dom Scott converted.
Young continued to attack brothers with Austin Power crossing over the line, but unlucky to score after twisting and turning and losing the ball.
Young led 10-nil at half time.
Wagga scored and converted for the first and last time in the 37th minute. This was answered to by Young in the 55th minute when Max Rolfe broke loose from 60m out, before passing to Nic Maloney who ran from 35m to score.
A busting 40m from Jonty Langfield sealed the deal with only five minutes remaining to secure Young’s first win of the season.
It was a great result for the 16s who have gone down by two points on three occasions this year.
It was a similar outcome for the 18s who played a patient game against a physical Wagga side.
Young held out Wagga’s attack for the first part of the game and were rewarded with a try by Nick Schiller who ran 60m to score for Young. Jesse Corcoran converted for Young.
It wasn’t until 15 minutes into the second half Walker barged over for Young’s third try. Corcoran converted to give Young a 16-nil lead. With five minutes remaining Wagga scored their first try of the match.
Overall it was a solid hit out for the Young team who are reaching their peek at the right time of the year.
In League Tag the Cherryettes closed the gap on the Brothers who put a 22-point win over them back in Round 7.
Young weren’t intimidated by the ladder leaders and continued to give their all despite Wagga crossing the line in the opening 10 minutes of the match.
Sarah Murray opened the score card for Young when she crossed the line after a quality play. The try wasn’t converted, leaving Young trailing 4-6.
Despite a gallant effort by the Cherryettes the visitors led 12-4 come the final buzzer.
The Cherryettes continue to prove they’re strong contestants in the competition and are able to ruffle the feathers of the teams above them.
This weekend the Cherrypickers will host Tumbarumba in three grades at Alfred Oval. First Grade look to continue their winning streak as they take on the last-placed Greens, while Reserve Grade and Cherryettes also chase a win.
