Despite a slow start the First Grade Yabbies soon built momentum on the sluggish ground at Hall Bros Oval. Coach Hagon Williams said the team reverted to basic football due to the conditions.
“We had to play basic football and run it through the middle,” he said. “The conditions made the ball pretty hard to keep a hold of.”
It was Curtis Target who found his way over the line first for Young 10 minutes into the match as a result of broken play by the Devils.
“That’s where our game started for us, we started building momentum from there and put pressure on them when they had the ball to force errors,” Williams said.
“Our forward play got us going – we were a bit more dominant in the forwards to get towards their try line and get a couple of tries.”
Second half was much the same, Young scoring early off the back play of a good set of forward runs.
“That got us a bit more confident and from there on the forwards just dominated and out wide,” Williams said.
“Zac Williams was busting through the defence and when we were defending he was the most dominant defender out there, that’s why he got three points and players player for the day.”
A number of errors late in second half proved costly for the Yabbies as two players were issued yellow cards, resulting in the only try for the Devils.
Young ran out victors 21-7, an outcome Williams was pleased with.
“We could have got more points but the way the conditions were it was a bit hard to handle the ball,” he said.
Second Grade also came out on top with a 17-14 result over the Devils.
Young will spend this week preparing to take on the Goulburn Dirty Reds in what Williams anticipates could lead to a second consecutive win.
