Luckily for the staff at St Tropez's exclusive Le Club 55, the sponge cake wasn't being hurled at the 85-year-old media mogul, it was the centrepiece of his youngest daughter's birthday celebrations held on the French Riviera.

The former couple, who divorced in 2013, broke bread for the first time publicly since the end of their 14-year relationship at the exclusive restaurant to mark Chloe Murdoch's 13th birthday.

Deng and Murdoch, looking relaxed in a beige linen suit, were joined by the octogenarian's fourth wife, model-actor Jerry Hall and, judging by the hashtags posted to Instagram, Hugh Jackman's wife Deborra-lee Furness.

There was no sign of Deng's reported flame, Russian president Vladimir Putin.

The lunch was also attended by James Packer's bestie and RatPac Entertainment business partner, Brett Ratner, who has been living it up onboard Arctic P with Mariah Carey and her extensive entourage of hired help.

However it appears Ratner was the Deirdre Chambers of the soiree, after coincidentally stumbling upon the festivities.

"Nice surprise to bump into a Murdoch family birthday lunch for Chloe Murdoch," he posted to Instagram while tagging in Deng and 20th Century Fox, the film studio now run by Chloe's elder step-brothers James and Lachlan.

Chloe and her sister Grace, 15, were bridesmaids at their father's wedding earlier this year. The teenagers joined Hall's model daughters, Georgia May and Elizabeth Jagger and her two sons, Gabriel and James, in the bridal party.

Chloe's cosy family lunch is the latest star-studded birthday event hosted in the playground of the rich, infamous and beautiful in recent weeks.
