Young went down by less than a goal to the previously win-less Bathurst Giants.
The Under 18s kicked the afternoon off and after a promising first term fell away and were never in the hunt with a well-drilled and gelled Giants outfit putting the Saints to the sword.
Hamish Gledhill had his best game of the season to date and strong performances in the backs and ruck saw him receive the CTR Trophies best on ground, just ahead of centre Brodie Harmer-Clark and fullback Brayden Harmer-Clark who both showed their worth over four quarters. Winger Bailey Pennell is also one of the most improved players this season.
The Saints were missing a few players last week and once they return for the hit-out against the Bushrangers in a fortnight another win could be on the cards.
First Grade went down to the wire in a see-sawing encounter which saw the Gaints gain their first win of the season and relegate the Saints to last position on the ladder.
“This game, even thought it was the battle of the cellar dwellers, was a highly skilled and entertaining game to be a part of, and in other reports to watch also,” player Geoff Harmer said.
“Ruckman Justin Kelly and onballer Rowen Hosken were two standouts for the Saints, as was Young’s newest recruit Anthony Mortimer who caused plenty of headaches for the Gaints.
Issac ‘Jacko’ James at fullback and Zac Callaghan were solid in defence and the back pockets of Harmer and Stewart Jewellers players player Robert Flynn repelled many attacking raids and spoiled a multitude of scoring opportunities for the Giants.
Under 18s – Young 4-5-29, Giants 16-9-105. Goals to H Gledhill, Brayden Harmer-Clark, B Pennell and B Sanderson.
First Grade – Young 12-11-83, Giants 13-9-87. Goals to R Hosken (4), R Roe snr (3), R Roe jnr, Z Callaghan, K Frame, C Hobbs and Brodie Harmer-Clark.
Young take on Orange at home on Saturday.
