The men’s division hope to secure their second win of the season against the struggling side in their quest of a comeback in the later part of the Football Wagga Wagga competition.
Captain-coach Calum McCaffery said ideally the Lions should win the next five rounds, and believes a similar result to the Round 7 thrashing of the Nomads, 8-1, would be a good start.
“We really need to get a couple of wins and score a few goals just to give us a good chance of getting that eighth spot ahead of Tumut and qualify for the Pascoe Plate finals,” he said.
The last five rounds of the regular season will see Young take on the Nomads, Tumut, Junee and Tolland, as well as one rescheduled match against Wagga United on August 7.
“I’m aiming for seven points out of those games as an absolute minimum, and other results going our way will qualify us for finals of the Plate,” McCaffery said.
Young will head into the weekend missing a number of key players due to injury including Blake Wilder, Conner McGregor and potentially McCaffery himself. While this will put the Lions on the back foot, he believes minimising errors will work to their advantage.
“We need to cut out the silly mistakes we’ve been playing with all season, and take our chances in front of goal,” McCaffery said.
“If things aren’t going our way during the game we have to keep our heads up, keep playing and try turn it around.”
In the Madden Trophy Young will take on the Cootamundra Strikers who hold second place on the ladder. It will be a tough weekend for the Lions who will be looking to redeem themselves of the 3-nil loss they were handed by the Strikers in Round 8.
The women will play at O’Connor Park, Coota at 9am on Sunday, while the men will play at Rawlings Park, Wagga at 3pm.
