It was my pleasure to meet with the Chair of the National Cherry Festival Committee, Lenore Schiller, recently.

We got together to discuss the preparations for the upcoming event that will be held on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of December this year.
It was wonderful to learn about the integral role that the Cherry Queen and King Competition plays in the event.
Not only in raising money for local charities, but also allowing the Committee to fundraise for the staging of the event itself.
Funds raised each year by entrants are shared between the entrants’ chosen charities and the National Cherry Festival Committee.
The funds do not become part of Council’s general revenue, but are used only to help defray costs of staging the event which include council staff hours, marketing of the event, entertainment and equipment hire.
I take my hat off to people like Lenore and the Committee as a whole for the tireless volunteer hours that go into planning and running the event.
I also applaud the significant contribution that such committees and volunteers do to ensure our regional events are successful.
These flagship events play an important role in promoting our region and local towns, and the impact of each tourism dollar spent is said to turnaround four times in the local economy.
The opportunity to showcase our region and promote our towns and villages is exactly that; ‘an opportunity’.
I encourage all of our businesses and our community to realise the opportunity that the National Cherry Festival presents for the entire region and get behind the event!
