They exceeded all expectations in defeating two Canberra teams and drawing 2-all with the Forbes Celtics.
Kick off was at 9.06am and it wasn’t long before the boys found themselves down 2-nil. With that ‘never say die’ attitude they dug deep to pile on the pressure and with some great passing the flying Jackson Riley smashed home a wonderful goal.
And then, right from the kick off, Riley Butcher stole the ball and with some amazing one-two passing he set up Nicholas Vu who calmly slotted the ball in the back of the net to tie up the game.
The game finished up a thrilling 2-2 draw.
Next on the list were Belwest, and once again the boys found themselves down a goal at half time. Young turned brutal defence by Sean Hughes into attack and it was the courageous Josh Cameron who found the net to tie things up.
After some end-to-end action Hunter Wells seized the moment to score an amazing goal to secure the victory which will be talked about for years.
Our last game was against Belnorth and this one wasn’t for the faint hearted.
Oscar Taylor was dynamic, in all the action and he was well supported by Toby Dowling who was absolutely brilliant in the backs. The game was played at pace and the Young boys started to tire, but they bravely hung on with some great defence.
Billy Brown was sensational as goalkeeper, constantly stopping Belnorth’s shots and right in the thick of the action.
The game was looking for a hero and from a corner kick that went straight to Hunter Wells, he hit the ball first time on the rise to blast it past the Belnorth team. All the boys then stepped it up to defend as they hung on for a well deserved 1-nil victory.
Great effort boys and congratulations on your fighting spirit and tremendous sportsmanship!
The Under 8s Young Trimech squad also played three games on the day.
In the first game against Gungahlin, Young scored first, then Gungahlin scored two goals, but the kids rallied together and scored to make it 2-all.
Young won game two against Cootamundra, 2-1.
The third and final game was against Monaro which ended up nil-all.
Club president Paul Cameron said he’s extremely proud of how the kids played throughout the day, but particularly in this game, given they had the last game of the day, and Monaro had six subs instead of the regulation three, which meant fresh players all through the game.
“All our games were played in the right spirit and coaches and parents are to be congratulated for the way in which they supported fair play from all teams,” Cameron said.
