The Under 16s were first to learn their fate when they were defeated by the Vikings on Sunday. Despite each scoring five tries, it was the Vikings who found themselves ahead on points to win the title, 31-27.

Young were first to score when James Schiller crossed the line, only for the Vikings to respond with another two before half time, 17-10.

Second half saw another three tries by Tom Turner, Milo Dowling and Frazer Ryder to put Young in the lead, but Vikings wrapped it up with a try and conversion in the final five minutes.

Paddy Fahey was named Man of the Match by ACT Rugby Union.

In the Under 18s Young took on St Edmund’s in what was another disappointing outcome for the Yabbies, 23-7. Young finished first half down 8-7 after a try to Brent Shoard, and sadly for the Yabbies, St Edmund’s ran away with the game.

Under 16s coach, John Turner, said it was a huge achievement for both teams to make the grand final.

“The boys will take a lot out of the season and they’ll come back even stronger next year in both grades,” he said.

“For two non-Canberra sides to reach the grand final in a Canberra comp is pretty bloody huge.”
