If there's one thing missing from current Hollywood cinema, it's a feeling of risk.

No wonder if young people prefer to seek out alternative, interactive forms of entertainment – Pokemon Go, for example, or the fictional equivalent portrayed in Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman's Nerve, an inventive teen thriller that comes as a welcome change of pace after a season's worth of lumbering blockbusters. 

Nerve takes its name from an imaginary online game in which players perform a series of dares, filmed on mobile phones and streamed live to a select audience, with dire punishments threatened for anyone who spills the beans. The challenges start off relatively innocent – kiss a stranger, go to a store to try on an expensive dress – but the stakes rise as players gradually drop out.
