NSW Fire and Rescue and were called out to the substation on Southdown Place in Airds at around 11.15 on Monday morning after reports of the explosion.

A Fire and Rescue spokesperson said, on arrival, they found a large electricity distribution kiosk emitting smoke, after experiencing an electrical fault.

At the scene ambulance workers treated two male patients. The first had suffered severe burns to his face, chest and hands, and was transported to the specialist burns unit at Royal North Shore Hospital, while the second had suffered minor burns and was taken to Liverpool Hospital.

Endeavour Energy confirmed that two of its electrical workers were receiving medical assistance after the workplace incident, which occurred close to the Airds BP petrol station and the Airds High School Campus.

"Endeavour Energy has contacted the families of the injured employees to offer its assistance. Endeavour Energy has staff on site and will commence a full investigation into the incident," a spokesperson said, adding that the incident had been reported to SafeWork NSW.

It is understood Fire and Rescue remained at the location until the distribution box was no longer a fault-risk and considered safe.
