The arrival of Spring has also heralded the start of a brand new season for participants in the very popular, and sometimes lucrative sport of harness racing and tonight’s prizemoney purse of over $55,000 has again attracted a bevy of top quality horses to the Young Paceway.

Racing will commence at 5:44pm with a capacity field for the Donges Supa IGA Pace over 2100 metres. The resuming Montana Shadow from the Steve Turnbull stable looks well placed with two wins before spelling. Bathurst regular Bernie Hewitt has Victoria Pass engaged and although awkwardly drawn, could be finishing strongly ahead of last start narrow winner Our Golden Jet for Bill Trembath. Athols Last Safari was disappointing at Bathurst last start following a win on the same track previously.
Race 2 for Southcon Concrete is again over 2100 metres and the selection is for back marker War Dan Apollo to continue his winning ways. The minors could be fought out by Place Your Bet for James Ponsonby and pole marker Storm Burst, a topical tip considering the weather of late. Josh Powderly has another last start winner in Shivarnee engaged and is drawn well.
The third race of the night, the Young Car Wash Pace has special handicap conditions which should suit Missed By Red who has been placed second at his last two outings. Wongalea Bingo was placed three times from four starts and is due for a change in luck while Navajo Rocky and Cullectomatic all have claims in a very open race. There was early money for the locally trained Forest Fury last week, but the Queensland import and a veteran of 125 starts found the opposition a little strong finishing third.
Race 4 will see the Phillip Maguire trained pole marker Drive The Dream possibly start favourite ahead of Perfect Sign and Major Blue Jeans. These two pacers together with Hes A Tease are all last start winners with backmarker Bryce Cooper winning two from five.
Aptly named Success Stud New Season Pace is Race 5 and this field will be as busy as the foaling barns at Success Stud. Last start winner Kiama Sutra driven by Scott Osmond sent the Kiama Bowling Club into a frenzy when he accounted for Mothers Angel on this track last week. Dangers are Benji Bromac to be driven by Madi Young while Written In Style and the locally trained Marys Little Rose could fill a minor placing.
The feature race of the night is Race 6, the AGL Energy Tabcorp Park Menangle $10,000 “Where Horses Fly” heat with a lucrative $25,000 final to be run on September 24 at Menangle.
Mothers Angel ran a good second here last week and is drawn well. Pretty Foxy also has good recent form and will be forward while the interesting runner is That Ideal to be driven by Goulburn trainer Neil Day. Neil has been off the scene for some time and he is gradually making inroads back into the sport.
Glen Mia Saddlery have kindly donated a working gig as part of the overall prize in Race 7. Bernie Hewitt could always use another cart and from gate one he could just be the man to take home the prize with Trunkey Emily. Although racing consistently of late, he will need some luck with Bertie Crocker for Bruce Harpley, Shazam Shannon for Peter Bullock and John Vautin and Blackbetty Shannon all having the form on the board.
Long time supporter David Cordina and Cordina Chicken Farms are sponsors of the final race. The three year olds are coming off a busy two year old campaign. Blake Jones has been nominated as driver for Rollnlombo and from gate one could be hard to beat. Temora duo Ron Tarbit and Ray Walker are certainly overdue for a win and Lalah has had one start when second. Million Dollar Cam is the only last start winner in the race and he could make it two in a row.
Admission is free with the Lions Club barbeque and TAB facilities in operation together with usual professionally run bar.
