James Daniel Walters, 25, applied for bail in Wodonga Magistrate’s Court on Friday following a raid at a Vienna Court home the previous day.

He told magistrate John Murphy he wanted to be released to care for his 16-year-old sibling.

That was in contrast to his alleged behaviour on Tuesday.

Walters – who has lived in Benalla but is also listed as having no fixed address – was allegedly driving a Holden Commodore with stolen plates north on the Hume Highway at Springhurst.

Wangaratta highway patrol members were conducting speed checks when the vehicle sped past at 169km/h. 

The vehicle increased up to a speed of between 195km/h and 200km/h as police tried to intercept the car about 5.30pm. 

The pursuit was terminated for safety reasons.

It’s alleged Walters’ brother had been a passenger and asked him to slow down.

The vehicle was seized at a home in Vienna Court on Thursday along with a range of other items and Walters was taken into custody.

He allegedly confessed to police and said he had been stupid and careless, for no particular reason.

Police allege Walters was also involved in a pursuit at Yarrawonga that hit about 150km/h last Sunday.

He has also been charged with stealing fuel on September 13, 16 and 19.

Walters was banned from driving for six months in May, but was allegedly caught riding a motorbike in Benalla two months later.

His brother cried in court when he was denied bail until at least Monday.

Walters had said the 16-year-old had nowhere to live and he wanted to take care of him.

He said he was “not on any drugs at the moment”.

The 25-year-old had a warrant out for his arrest before he was caught. 

He has two prior cases of failing to appear before court and is charged with two counts of evading police, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, two counts of driving whilst disqualified and three theft charges.
