For the average person the closest they come to fishing is buying a fillet from the local supermarket, but the Department of Primary industries (DPI) is aiming to change that, with a day promoting recreational fishing.

The DPI’s “Go Fishing NSW Day” will be held on Sunday, October 16, from 12pm to 4.30pm at the Young Bowling Club and supported by the Young Bowling Club Fishing Club and the Young District Anglers. The Fishing Day is a celebration of recreational fishing as a healthy, outdoors, family activity.
A range of fun-filled activities will be held with the hopes of introducing many kids and adults to recreational fishing and providing their first ever fishing experience with the kids clinic “Get Hooked” and trivia and drawing competitions.
Member of the Young Bowling Club Fishing Club, Peter Slattery, said the day was a promotion of the clubs, as well as DPI and WaterWays NSW.
“Both clubs have come together to support this day, it’s an opportunity to promote us and get people interested in joining a club,” he said.
“The benefit of joining a club is you have an organised event that you can strive to each month, whereas if you say you’ll go fishing by yourself next time you’ll be free you’ll never be free.”
Mr Slattery said those who took up the sport didn’t have the flashiest boat on the water.
“It’s a good way of a family having an outing together and you can spend as much or as little as you want to. One person could have a $30,000 dollar boat and another an $800 boat and you both have the same chance of catching a fish”.
Mr Slattery said the Department of Primary Industries would be talking about fishing habitats, do’s and dont’s of fishing, where the public’s fishing licence money is spent and some details on local restocking.
“It’s always interesting to hear how the fisheries are working towards restocking fish, we’ve been restocking Chinamans Dam you can go out their and catch cod and yellow belly, years ago you couldn’t”.
One of the day’s draw cards will be the 2SM Hi-tide Fishing Program who will be broadcasting from Young for the 30 Year Anniversary of the Young Bowling Club Fishing Club the night before and the “Go Fishing NSW Day”.
Mr Slattery wished to thank the event’s sponsors.
“We’ve had great support from the local sponsors to be able to put the show on, without the local sponsors we wouldn’t be able to pay for the day,” he said.
