Jack Walker, a staffer to cabinet minister Christopher Pyne, flew in to Perth from Kuala Lumpur at around 3pm local time on Friday with his father John Walker.

The 26-year-old walked through the international arrivals hall flanked by his father and another man, breaking his silence only to say he was "happy to be back".

News cameras and several journalists followed Mr Walker as he jumped into a waiting car outside the airport, but he did not answer any of their questions.

Mr Walker and his eight friends spent four nights in a Malaysian jail cell after being detained for dressing down during the Sepang sporting event on Sunday.

The group of mates, most of whom are from Sydney, were let off with a caution in Sepang Magistrates Court on Thursday and wasted little time boarding a flight back home to Australia.

Branden Stobbs, 29, Edward Leaney, 25, Nicolas Kelly, 27, Thomas Laslett, 28, Thomas Whitworth, 28, James Paver, 27, Adam Pasfield, 25 and Timothy Yates, 29, also arrived home on Friday.

At Sydney airport on Friday morning, Mr Kelly provided a short statement to a waiting media throng, saying the Australians were very glad to be home.

"We'd like to take this opportunity to express our deep gratitude and thanks to the Australian consulate in Malaysia as well as also to our families for all that they've done for us over the last couple of days," he said.

"We'd like to urge all Australians travelling overseas in the future to be very aware of the cultural differences and sensitivities that exist in other nations.

"We'd like to take this opportunity to ask you to please be respectful of our families' privacy at this time."

A crowd of cameras then jostled with the group as they made a beeline for the airport exit, jumped into a waiting Mercedes van and left. Four of the men arrived on flights into Sydney, while four others came via other airports.

A passenger who took footage of the men as they waited for their bags in the baggage claim area described their mood as "very solemn".

"Very calm and a little sombre looking," Central Coast woman Chloe Abdilla, 28, said.

"They were dressed for the occasion. They obviously knew they were expecting some media attention."

The men were met with a frosty reception by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who told Adelaide radio station FIVEaa that he would speak to Mr Pyne about the incident, particularly in reference to his staffer.

"Certainly the young man involved needs to have a very hard look at himself, and I'm sure will be considering his future carefully," Mr Turnbull said.

"Look, they apologised to the court and that was appropriate and they're home or on their way home, and that's good.

"You can see why the Foreign Minister and I were very careful and circumspect in what we said publicly, because what we always seek to achieve in these situations is ... that Australians are able to return home after incidents like this.

"I think the Malaysian authorities were very lenient and I think the young Australian men were very repentant but they do need to reflect very seriously on their conduct."

Now back home, the men, many of whom know each other through studying at the University of Sydney, intend to return a sense of normality to their lives, including returning to their careers.

Mr Yates is the son of senior diplomat Tom Yates (who served as consul-general in Libya and is now trade commissioner in Fukuoka, Japan) and the nephew of Peter Yates (former Packer family vassal and current Myer Family Investments deputy chairman). He was educated in Jakarta and Melbourne, and now works with Emersion Software Systems.

Brisbane-educated Thomas Laslett, a Palm Beach SLSC member and senior project engineer, worked with construction firm Leighton before joining the Sydney Light Rail project when the Liberals won government. His father Craig Laslett is a managing director at Lend Lease.

Fellow Palmie clubbie Thomas Whitforth attended The King's School, completed an economics degree at Sydney and now works for First Class Capital.

Edward Leaney attended Trinity Grammar and is now general manager of the family company, Focus Uniforms.

Nick Kelly, a product of Sydney Grammar, works in advertising while Adam Pasfield, the son of a publican, attended St Aloysius College and is a medical graduate from the University of NSW.

James Paver works at Leighton Properties.

Canadian Branden Stobbs is a marketeer who also studied at Sydney University.
