The team of 10 – Fire & Rescue NSW captain Ryan Terry, deputy captain Dick Donges, Mat McKnight, Russel Job, Trent Jamieson, Shawn Rolfe, Brett Gibbons, Don Thomas, Craig Tierney, and Sam Woods - were among 446 fire fighters to take part in Sunday’s challenge which saw them climb 1504 stairs (98 floors) of the Sydney Tower Eye wearing full firefighting kits in 19 minutes.

Further to their efforts the locals have landed within top four on the leader board in raising the most money in a team and individually. Come 2pm yesterday Worst Pace Scenario 513 ranked fourth in top teams with $19,180, and individually team member Ryan Terry sits at third in raising $10,361.25.

Ryan said while the climb was one of the most challenging things he’s done, he and his fellow fire fighters had plenty of motivation along the way with each floor dedicated to those who have lost their battle to the disease.

And for Young, Level 22 was dedicated to Skye Edwards who lost her battle on September 9.

“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done but I can imagine it’d be nothing compared to having Motor Neurone Disease or having to support someone who does,” Ryan said.

Overall the climb has raised $484,794, with the goal to reach $500,000. 

Ryan said the experience has made himself and his team proud to be a part of the community who have shown tremendous support in helping the team reach their goal.

“We do a lot of fundraising at the station which goes to local charities and families, but it was good to be able to give to a national event that is hopefully going to cure this bastard disease,” he said.

“Once Syke passed away I said we have to get into it and really help out as much as we can by doing fundraisers and raising as much as we can.

“We appreciate everyone who has donated, from $1 to $1000 – it all helps and hopefully the money we’ve raised helps cure or at the least slow the disease down.”

The team already have plans of returning next year where they hope to exceed this year’s target.
