The Shield was first held in 1935 when HJW (Harry) Pilis presented a shield to be competed for by three schools ~ Bendick Murrell, Crowther and Wirrimah.
Yesterday saw Greenethorpe, Koorawatha, Monteagle, Murringo and Wombat Public Schools compete for the shield in its 80th year.
Greenethorpe were this year’s host school, even though the shield is actually competed for each year now at Gus Smith Oval in Young.
In 2005 Bendick Murrell, Galong, Greenethorpe, Koorawatha (Host School), Monteagle, Murringo and Wombat competed in the 70th year of the Phillips Shield.
Harry Phillps went to school at Koorawatha and served in the Armed Forces from 1914 to 1918 and was wounded in France.
After the war he became foreman on the Wirrimah Soldiers Settlement.
He was President of the Wirrimah RSL from 1924 until his death in 1962 as well as a one time P and C president.
