Now in it’s 19th year, the event is a great opportunity for people to play some great golf on a competitive course. Over 200 competitors from all over the country and world will arrive to take part in the yearly event.
“It’s become a tradition in town,” organiser, Bill Carney, said. “People come and enjoy some golf.”
Bill said the course is in reasonable condition considering the weather and there are over $3000 worth of donated trophies up for grabs.
“Everything costs money so the sponsors are very important,” he said.
There are more entries for the week this year compared to the last, which is good news for the club.
The week of golf is not only good for the Golf Club, but for the town of Young too, said Bill, with visitors coming and spending a lot of money.
Hilltops Communications and Economic Development Officer, David Newberry said they have calculated the average tourist brings $130 per person, per night to the town. That figure doesn’t just cover accommodation, but money spent at shops, hotels, restaurants and clubs.
The five days of golf will bring in “$130, 000 of additional expenditure in the town,” David said. That figure is from the number of competitors alone. Not everyone visits alone, a lot of the time they bring partners, wives and friends too according to both David and Bill. Not everyone plays golf, they instead visit shops and sightseeing in the Young area, but every dollar they spend goes to the local economy.
“It’s a great week for the town.” Bill said. In previous years the event has filled motels to capacity, both David and Bill are expecting the same this year.
While Young Golf Club is hoping for the weather to be, “lots of sunshine and not too hot,” the weather prediction is that the day will be cold and raining either way it will hardly put a dampener on the week of golf.
A meet and greet will be held at the Young Golf Club on Sunday afternoon from 5pm with the week of competition teeing off at 7am on Monday morning.
The club would like to acknowledge their sponsors; The Commercial Hotel, Country Brewer, SouthWest Fuel, Petries Mitre 10, Blue Still, Bush Beautique, Jewelz ‘n’ Things, “Martins” Fruits Kingsvale, P.J’s Fast Food, Young Federation Motor Inn, Sheehan’s Sunnyside Bakery & Cafe, Donges Supa IGA, Hamblin’s Amcal Pharmacy, Wilders Bakery, Sharron’s Hairline, Terry Bros Carpet Court, Poppa’s Fudge & Jam Factory, Norton Realty.
