Various British politicians – of all political flavours – have called US president-elect Donald Trump such things as "wazzock", "poisonous", "buffoon", "repellent", "demagogue" and "out of his mind".

But few have as many or as colourful words to swallow as does the leader of Scotland's Conservatives, Ruth Davidson.

"So, Twitter, we're all agreed?" she wrote in December last year. "Trump's a clay-brained guts, knotty-pated fool, whoreson obscene greasy tallow-catch, right?"

She was quoting Shakespeare's Henry IV, who lost his temper after Falstaff made up yet another brazen lie.

"These lies are like their father who begets them," Hal had said. "Gross as a mountain, open, palpable."

Ms Davidson, who last month was named Scotland's politician of the year, was more temperate after hearing the election result.

"We now have to hope that president Trump turns out to be a different man to candidate Trump," she said. "Mr Trump tapped into the disaffection we are seeing across the world right now due to economic uncertainty. That's not something we can ignore."

Ms Davidson is far from alone. Naturally, UK foreign secretary Boris Johnson has a Trump entry on the long list of foreign leaders he's been rude about.

"Donald Trump is clearly out of his mind," Johnson said in December, reacting to Mr Trump's proposed ban on Muslim immigrants.

On Mr Trump's claim that some parts of London were "no-go areas", Mr Johnson said "he's betraying a quite stupefying ignorance that makes him frankly unfit to hold the office of president of the United States".

He said he would invite Mr Trump to London but "I wouldn't want to expose Londoners to any unnecessary risk of meeting Donald Trump."

After the election, Mr Johnson sent his congratulations to Mr Trump, saying he was "much looking forward to working with his administration".

Mr Johnson is known for his colourful language. But on Mr Trump he has serious competition.

In January, in Westminster Hall, politicians convened to discuss two e-petitions totalling more than half a million signatures, that had called for Mr Trump to be banned from the UK.

Labour MP Dr Rupa Huq called Mr Trump a "hate figure preaching these ridiculous things", and "repellent because he is not only racist but homophobic and misogynistic".

Conservative Dr Andrew Murrison​ pointed out, presciently, "we have to be alive to the possibility that this ridiculous individual may be elected as president".

Labour's Paul Flynn said Mr Trump was "a person who is seen to be impulsive and not well informed" who should be confronted on "his words of prejudice, his lack of knowledge and intolerance".

Conservative Paul Scully said Mr Trump's views on immigration were "not acceptable for an aspirant world leader".

Labour's Tulip Siddiq​ called him "a poisonous, corrosive man" whose "words stoke and inflame hate crime".

Conservative Sir Edward Leigh called him a "demagogue".

Northern Ireland Unionist Gavin Robinson said Mr Trump was a "ridiculous xenophobe" and an Adolf Hitler-reading "buffoon (who) has the dangerous capability of saying the most obscene or insensitive things". He added Mr Trump's "bad policy would change the nature, image and reputation of the United States irrevocably".

Conservative Tom Tugendhat​ said "I think Mr Trump is crazy and has no valid points to make".

Conservative Victoria Atkins called Mr Trump "a wazzock".

Scottish National Party's Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh said Mr Trump's comments on Muslims, women, people with disabilities and Mexicans, "the list is never-ending, (are) not just wrong. His comments are dangerous… (they) have bolstered the twisted narrative promoted by the terrorist cult Daesh (and) fuelled racial tensions across the world … (he) threatens not only the national security of our friends in the USA, but our security."

In response to this, Conservative Alex Chalk suggested "this is actually about buffoonery".

Labour's Jack Dromey​ said "Donald Trump is a fool" whose mere presence in the UK would "be fundamentally wrong and would undermine the safety and security of our citizens".

SNP's Corri Wilson, whose constituency includes a Trump golf resort, compared Mr Trump to a "louse".

Conservative Kwasi Kwarteng​ objected to "Donald J. Trump's objectionable and hateful views".

Conservative Marcus Fysh​ called him "the orange prince of American self-publicity".

SNP's Gavin Newlands concluded: "Let us be clear, he is an idiot."

But the minister for Immigration James Brokenshire denied the petitions, saying "the best way to defeat such nonsense is to engage in robust, democratic debate and make it very clear that his views – that is, Donald Trump's views – are not welcome".

Prime Minister Theresa May will be among those who criticised Trump the candidate but have welcomed Trump the president.

However she doesn't have as big a problem as her predecessor would have – David Cameron called Trump "stupid, divisive and wrong".

Mrs May got where she is by being carefully low-key about her Remain campaigning, leaving plenty of room for a three-point turn after the referendum.

And she was similarly cautious in her Trump-bashing: at one point saying he was "divisive, unhelpful and wrong" to suggest London police officers lived in fear, adding "I just think it shows he does not understand the UK and what happens in the UK".

After the election, she congratulated Mr Trump on his win and said she looked forward to working with him on building trade, security and defence ties.
