As The Age wrote in July, the former Melbourne footballer turned media personality will not be going back to the Thursday-night light variety program he co-hosted for a decade.

Lyon and former Footy Show colleague Billy Brownless had a falling-out earlier this year, when it became public Lyon had been having a relationship with Brownless' ex-wife Nicky.

Lyon retreated from public life to recover from mental ill health and was replaced on The Footy Show by Rebecca Maddern.

Beyond Blue chairman Jeff Kennett in February said Lyon was seriously ill.  

He will appear on Footy Classified with The Age's chief football writer Caroline Wilson, Essendon great Matthew Lloyd and broadcaster Craig Hutchison next year.

Channel Nine's managing director Ian Paterson said in a statement on Tuesday he was looking forward to having Lyon back on air in 2017.

"Over the years Garry's played a vital role in the success of Footy Classified and we can't wait to see him back on station and tackling the season ahead," he said.

In the same statement, Lyon said he loved Footy Classified.

"Thankfully, I have an opportunity to resume my role with three people I respect and look forward to working alongside again," he said.
