Annette Parr, Committee Member, has lived in Young for the past four years. She has been employed in various areas of nursing from nurse educator to administration in Aged Care. She has also worked in advertising. She has an interest in public speaking and writing, and has completed courses at both Toastmasters and NIDA. Annette has trained as a Hospital chaplain, and is a retired Pastor. She is interested in all areas of caring for people - both physically, emotionally and spiritually - and now works casually as a Funeral Celebrant.

Why did you join the LHAC? ‘As a new-comer into Young, I thought the committee might be a way to get involved in the community while tapping into my life and work-place experiences.’

What changes have you seen in local health services? ‘At the Hospital, I’ve seen a more positive attitude in staff that’s been reflected in their general professionalism. I have seen a change in the approach of staff to patients who present to the Emergency Department to a more consultative and active approach. I see their thinking as: “we’re as important as any other staff in the health care system, and we do our best in sometimes very difficult situations”. There’s a growing pride in achievement, and improvement in staff morale, I believe.’

What’s top of your health wish list? ‘I’d like to see more Doctors commit to settling into regional and country areas. I believe, sadly, that as a country community are disadvantaged by the lack of permanent Doctors in the town. Those we have are competent, hardworking and dedicated to their profession and do a good job under much pressure, often not having enough hours in the day to see everyone.’

Any areas of special interest? ‘Palliative care, in general, including allowing people to die at home where possible. A number of initiatives have been developed in the NSW Government’s 2012-2016 Palliative Care plan including a $12 million funding pool for Local Health Districts to address the palliative care needs of their community, Paediatric palliative care ‘pop-up’ teams, a Paediatric Palliative Care website, and a Volunteer Support Program, run by Palliative Care.

Any upcoming activities you’d like to share? ‘I’d also like to encourage everyone to have their say on local health services in the 2016 MLHD Community Survey. The survey remains open until December 31.
