There is usually some form of an apprenticeship in crime. Most crooks go through the ranks, from shoplifter to street thug and car thief until they progress to the serious stuff. Reading a criminal record is the same as examining a school report, where the student moves from general subjects to specialties, in this case often graduating to a maximum security cell.
