Popular sporting identity Ray Bourke has taken up the exciting challenge to get involved in the sport of kings.
Ray has been a dedicated and long standing committee member of the Young Services Club. During this time he took on the roll of Sporting Director a position which he carried out for a number of years. Ray was a member of the Young Hockey Club in which he gained recognition in the lead up to the 1956 Olympic Games train on squad. As an avid rugby league player he starred as a promising fullback with representative honors well within his grasp until injury forced him to the sideline.
In his mature years, Ray joined the Young Lions Club and has been without a doubt a leading ticket seller and hard working committeeman for many years. His experience, combined with his notable “people skills” can only be described as an asset for the Young Turf Club and their newly elected committee.
Harness Racing convert Symone Grimson will assist Ray in his day to day activities and will no doubt continue her roll as assistant secretary.
The new President of the club is the highly respected owner and breeder Richard Thackeray who takes over the roll from Alison O'Hara who will remain on board as the Senior Vice President along with her counterpart Craig Hardy.
Keith Carmody will continue in his roll as Treasurer with Stuart Maxwell taking on the task of Publicity Officer.
The next race meeting for the club will be held on Saturday 20th May 2017 with local publicans Gary and Maree Cummins from the Young Hotel once again supporting the meeting in conjunction with the South West Slopes Credit Union.
Participants in the local racing scene were saddened to learn of the passing of a great supporter of the Young Club in Cootamundra trainer Tricia Anderson on December 26th. Tricia had battled her illness for a number of years before her condition deteriorated and she passed away at the Murrumburrah-Harden District Hospital on Boxing Day.
Her last visit to the Young track was in May last year when she won the first race on the programme with the well bred Lonhro four year old mare Brahmagiri who registered her ninth win from twenty-two starts ridden by Wagga jockey and former local Brad Clark.
Clark, who rode in Tumut on Boxing Day, dedicated his win to the local trainer by wearing a black armband in every race on the day to show support for the family and in remembrance of the dedication Tricia had for the sport.
“We’ll always remember her.” Clark said.
