In extremely hot conditions, over one hundred and ten teams and thousands of players converged on Walker Park to battle it out for touch football glory.
The Young men’s team had a fantastic Saturday winning their pool games and displaying some outstanding skills.
According to committee member Ben Cooper, the side gelled very well despite some new combinations who hadn’t played together.
“It was great to be able to field such a quality team. Having Joel McKenzie back playing for Young was great and he slotted straight into playing alongside his old school players like Jahnayah Freeman, Will Dunn, Jayke Hogan, Luke Doldissen and Nathan Anderson,” Cooper said.
Cooper was also extremely impressed with Will Manwaring, Mitch Kennedy and Jock Ward who added explosive speed and great ball skills. The young blood on the team BJ Flick and Jake Davis prove that the next generation of touch players are coming along very well.
The ladies and mixed teams also performed commendably with the ladies under 18’s team proving they can match it with many of the opens teams they played. The girls have demonstrated significant improvement on the field and are beginning to execute the set plays and driving pattern they have been working on at training. The girls now turn their focus towards Junior State Cup in Port Macquarie to be held later in February.
“All of Young’s teams played exceptionally well and there was a very relaxed and fun atmosphere within the squad. Young’s teams would like to thank Brandon Sanderson and Tim Maloney for their refereeing expertise and all the friends and parents who came over to support throughout the weekend,” Cooper said.
Attracting the highest quality teams from across the eastern states of Australia, the Yass Knockout is one of a kind. Many of the top Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne teams traveled to Yass to attend the carnival.
Sporting the newly designed and created uniforms for Young Touch Association, the ladies, mens and mixed teams looked the part and represented Young extremely well according to Cooper.
“After such a fun weekend of outstanding games, Young Touch will certainly be making the trip back to Yass in 2017. The committee would like to congratulate Yass Touch Association for hosting such a well organised and professionally run event,” Cooper said.
