Mr Cooper said he'd had enough of rubbish strewn around the skate park and decided to do something about it.

"Many of us in the community have had a gutful of the rubbish down along the creek and in the skate park so I rocked up knowing the kids had a day off school and when I asked for help every single person using the park dropped what they were doing and helped me," he said.

"I'm pretty pleased with their efforts, youth get a bad rap sometimes with some accusing them of being lazy, well I'm pretty proud of these guys here, they filled up seven garbage bags with rubbish.

"The skate park is an important asset to the youth of our community and we want to ensure that we encourage our young people to respectfully enjoy the spaces that have been created for them."

Skate park regular Jackson Knight said keeping the park clean is in the best interests of the people that use it.

"Keeping the park clean is about helping us, we care if it is clean so it really was no big deal to grab a bag and fill it with rubbish," he said. "This park is completely useless if it is not clean because a little piece of rubbish left in the bowl could cause an accident and seriously hurt a kid, send him to brain surgery if he falls of his board and hits his head.

Hilltops Council is set to roll out an anti-littering campaign within the region to crack down on littering.

Council Administrator Wendy Tuckerman said that the campaign will send a clear message that littering is unacceptable and that litterers will be seen and fined. 

“Litter is one of our region’s most unnecessary and preventable environmental issues," she said. "Council can issue fines of $250 for an individual and $500 to a corporation for littering.

“Proactive community members such as Mr Cooper and his students have the right attitude and the right idea. I hope we see more of these sorts of organic leadership initiatives.”
