The 46th West Wyalong Rugby League Pre-season Knockout is on this weekend and with teams coming from across the state it is guaranteed to keep the Young teams on their toes.

Captain and coach for the Cherrypickers James Woolford said that the teams aren’t looking too bad going into the knockout that begins Friday at Ron Crowe Oval in West Wyalong.

Woolford believes they’ve got a good side fronting to the event and with the hard work and dedication from training they’re on track to do well.

“We’re going there to win.” Woolford said.

There will be 15 teams taking part in the men’s competition with the Cherrypickers to face the West Wyalong Mallee Men in the first round draw and if they win the team will go on to play in the Saturday part of the competition.

This year’s knockout will feature three premiership winners from 2016 with the Forbes Magpies, Southcity Bulls and Tullibigeal-Lakes United Sharks all taking part in the event.

The Tullibigeal-Lakes United Sharks will take on Wagga Brothers in the opening match of the knockout.

Clubs from Group Nine have once again dominated the entrants pool in the mens divison with Group Nine clubs Brothers, Junee, Temora and Gundagai joining SouthCity, Kangaroos and Young for the event, which is worth almost $15,000.

After an amazing 2016 season the Young Women’s League Tag Cherryettes are in a good position to take out the 2017 League Tag Knockout competition in West Wyalong this weekend.

With 10 teams ranging from locals all the way to Cobar in the state’s west, there will be plenty of challenges for the women when they run on the field this Saturday.

The Cherryettes will play Forbes in their first game on Saturday before they take on Yenda in game four of the competition.

If the Cherryettes perform well and win they will then go on to play in the knockout part of the event that could see them playing for some big bucks.

Coach and captain Jess McInerney believes they have a young and strong team fielded this year for the West Wyalong Knockout.

Between last season’s performance and the training the women have put in so far this year the Cherryettes chances will all come down to how they play on the day.
