Mrs Longhurst’s husband, Rodney Longhurst is battling leukaemia and she wants to support him and others in Young that are fighting the same fight.
“I am taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave in 2017 in support of my husband and others in the community who are living with leukaemia every day and their families who go on this journey with them,” Mrs Longhurst said.
Mrs Longhurst isn’t only wanting to raise funds for blood cancer research, but to help those who have been diagnosed with the disease as well.
“Support is required not just for research but also transport, accommodation and support programs,” she said.
Mrs Longhurst has set herself a goal of raising $2,000 before she braves the shave, but of course hopes that she will go over her goal.
“To date I have gained support from many businesses in town with David Hamblin of Amcal Max to match his $50 donation,” Mrs Longhurst said.
“Thank you also to Robert Donges, Mick Terry and Kerry and Jamie Callaghan.
Mrs Longhurst has organised a monster raffle thanks to businesses around Young who have donated vouchers and gift packages towards the huge prize.
“Thank you also to Mitre 10, Juicy Lucy, Complete Garden, Young Hardware, Studio 99, Label A, Furniture One, Townhall Newsagent, Young Newsagent, Wilders Bakery, YES Embroidery and Robynettes Fabrics who have lent their support so far,” she said.
The Burrangong Bears Rugby League Club will be holding a charity football match against Bathurst CSU to lend their support to the cause and help Mrs Longhurst reach her goal.
The game will be on March 18 at Hall Brothers Oval.
The football match will be followed by an event at the Australian Hotel from 5 pm to 7 pm to raise further funds.
“Everyone is invited to come along and see the girls from Scissor Sisters shave my head for this great cause,” Mrs Longhurst said.
The Leukemia foundation said blood cancer is the third most common cause of cancer death in Australia, claiming more lives than breast cancer or melanoma.
The Leukemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave raises money to fund research into the disease and the search for a cure.
Participants in the World’s Greatest Shave can raise money to either colour, wax, loose their beard or shave their hair.
