With one in five people in Australia living with a disability, the Hilltops Council wants to build a strong and equitable community for all residents.
The council held a public forum last week to seek feedback on their Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP)
Council is seeking to put together a DIAP that focuses on developing positive community attitudes and behaviours, creating a liveable community, supporting access to meaningful employment and improving access to services to help people with a disability within the local government area.
Council General Manager Anthony McMahon said people with a disability must have the same right to access opportunities and enjoy the benefits of living and working in our community as all residents do.
“All Councils across NSW are required to develop a DIAP with their communities and Hilltops Council is very keen to have strong community input into our plan,” he said.
"Last week's public focus meetings were for initial input that wouldn’t be captured through survey and to provide greater detail about the process of preparing the plan.
"Those results will feed into a draft Plan which then goes to committees for review, verification and refinement and then that will be presented to Council in April for endorsement to place on public exhibition for 28 days."
Mr McMahon said The public get to have input on the draft plan when it is finalised.
