All the sights, sounds and aromas of a traditional Chinese street market festival will be enjoyed in Young on Saturday March 25 when the Lambing Flat Chinese Festival is staged for the fourth time.
Local businesses are embracing the Lambing Flat Chinese Festival this month offering sale specials and colourful window displays as the annual celebrations takes on a new focus in the town’s commercial heart.
The Lynch Street post office block, from Boorowa through to Cloete Streets, is festival central this year, with colourful lanterns, Asian and Multicultural food stalls, craft and market stalls, Chinese music, local performances and spectacular Chinese Lion Dancing to entertain crowds.
A popular drawcard, the lion dancers will give three gravity defying performances culminating in an illuminated night rendition.
The Chinese lion dancers from the Australian Yau Kung Mun Association will perform on poles erected in front of the Post Office.

Throughout the day musicians David and Eva will play a wide range of Chinese music which will feature the Chinese violin, Chinese harp, Chinese woodwind instruments including the gourd pipe and the recorder.
There will also be traditional martial arts performances by the Australian National University Traditional Chinese Cultural Society and the ancient art of Chinese calligraphy writing demonstrations.
Many of the festival attractions, including market stalls, will be operating during the Saturday morning, with the official opening set for 2pm.
There will be also art, cultural and historical displays and a schools’ event featuring junior and senior students from schools within the town and region villages.
An initiative of Hilltops Council, the festival transforms the town’s goldfield past into a multicultural festival showcasing Chinese culture and food and the festival is an important multicultural event for Young, Hilltops and the Canberra region.
The Lambing Flat Chinese Festival Sculpture, Wood and Big Art Exhibition will also be available for viewing at the Young Town Hall on the day of the festival.
The Exhibition opens on Wednesday March 22 at 7pm and can be viewed through to Sunday March 26.
Apart from a full day of colourful entertainment there was also opportunity for people to visit the Chinese Tribute Garden and see the relic of the era, The Roll Up Banner now housed at the Lambing Flat Folk Museum.
The festival program will be available to download from visithilltopsregion.com.au and can be obtained from the Young Visitor Information Centre located off Lovell Street or can be found in various local shops.
