The first trailer for the anticipated Thor: Ragnarok, released overnight, gives us our first glimpse of Blanchett as Hela, Thor's dark foe in the upcoming blockbuster.

Clad in a chic black leather get-up, complete with dark hair, nails and heavy mascara, Blanchett looks to have got her inspiration from early '00s nu-goth music videos, as much as the comics' Norse mythology.

With its slightly on-the-nose nod to Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song, the rest of the trailer skews closer to Marvel's trademark rollicking, colourful shtick.

Helmed by New Zealand's Taika Waititi, the director of cult faves Boy and What We Do In The Shadows, the film looks to retain Thor's '80s-inspired silliness, a welcome antithesis to the dramatic dourness of last year's DC output.

Mark Ruffalo's Hulk makes an appearance for what Waititi recently described as a Midnight Run-esque romp with Chris Hemsworth's Thor, while Jeff Goldblum, with his Ziggy Stardust-y collars and sparkly pompadour, features as the wacky Grandmaster.

Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Idris Elba (Heimdall) and Tom Hiddleston, playing fan fave Loki, round out the all-star cast.

Of course, Blanchett, Hemsworth and Waititi aren't the movie's only local-ish roots.

The film was largely shot in parts of southeast Queensland last year, even transforming Brisbane's CBD into a makeshift New York City last August.

While there aren't any tourism-inducing glimpses of Southbank's Streets Beach (is that even possible?), local government - which sweetened the production with hefty tax offsets in the tens of millions - will be hoping an international success might entice further blockbuster deals to our shores.

For the moment though, its Blanchett's unexpected turn - reportedly fuelled by gruelling scrimmages with New Zealand stuntwoman, and frequent Quentin Tarantino collaborator, Zoe Bell - that's all the talk, with online commenters voicing enthusiasm for the star's Goddess of Death, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first major female villain.

"Could Hela from Thor: Ragnarok be the best Marvel villain since Loki?" asks website The Verge.

We'll find out when the film opens in cinemas in November.
