Mr Sheather represented Australia at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, Wales in boxing.
Mr Sheather's sister Rhonda O'Donnell said it is a big achievement to turn 80.
"He has remained fit and healthy over the years, due to his sport and his keen interest in greyhounds, I am very proud of him," she said.
"He is such a nice man, he brought me back a lovely shawl from his overseas sporting travels, he is our family treasure."
Mr Sheather's son Graham said his father's sporting achievements have been under appreciated in Young.
"He is one of the better athletes to come out of Young and I'm pretty proud of him," he said.
"I think it is a pity he did not go professional with his boxing, I think he could have made an impact.
"The entire family wish him a happy birthday.
“We all hope he has many more."
