Their impressive rise was compounded by headlines the duo created, like the release of nearly 200 live rats on a catwalk in 2001 or showcasing their sunglasses range propped on a penis.
This week, Single, 39, who is married to international IMG model, Bambi Northwood-Blyth, 25, was again making headlines after finding himself on the receiving end of a swift and severe backlash when he set up, and then deleted, a GoFundMe account asking for a $250,000 handout to bankroll his recovery and lifestyle after an accident last month in which he fell three floors from his Paris hotel room window.
With a love of sharing his lavish lifestyle online, the notorious party boy, who has a son Justice, 10, with P.E. Nation's Pip Edwards, was labelled "greedy" and a "disgrace".
Dan Single has had a remarkable fall from fashion grace.
He once boasted stores in Bondi, Paddington, and in New York's SoHo district; hung out with Eminem and Suzy Menkes; and collaborated with the late Richard Nicoll and Jeremy Scott, current creative director of Moschino. While everyone from Jude Law to Madonna was wearing Ksubi.
But after a trademark infringement dispute in 2006 resulted in a name change and a failed bid to sell the label to investors, the fashion house, founded in 1999 by the two knock-about surfers from the northern beaches, was handed over to administrators in 2010.
"Business is not our specialty - it's the creative that we're good at," Gorrow told Fairfax Media in September 2007.
Bleach bought it for $5 million, but it had already racked up big losses while in the hands of Single and Gorrow.
In 2013, Bleach went into liquidation and Breakwater Management acquired Ksubi. The label is now stocked in General Pants Co., Barneys and Harrods, with no links to its original founders.
In the same year, Single was slapped with a three-year ban on being a company director.
He and Northwood-Blyth now co-own ros?? brand, Pour Les Amour, and a luxury pyjamas range, Pjame.
