A large crowd turned out for the yearly celebration of women supporters at the Yabbies game against the Dirty Reds and despite the Young side going down by one point the ladies thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
The event and game wasn’t only a celebration of the women who support and barrack for the boys, but a fundraiser for the Cauliflower Club.
The Cauliflower Club raises money for severely injured players with all money raised staying in the local community and used to assist and rehabilitate those who have suffered significant injury whilst playing rugby union.
Even the teams got behind both the ladies and charity by wearing special pink jerseys, but unfortunately, the first-grade side went down by a single point in their tightly contested game 29-28.
Young started strongly and were dominant in the forwards only to be held up over the line. Goulburn responded in the second half scoring three tries in quick succession.
Young again gained the lead midway through the second half but in the end, Goulburn made the most of the missed opportunities and ran out as the winners 29-28.
Coach Shane Botham said it wasn’t so much that Goulburn won the game but rather Young lost it, showing his bitter disappointment in the final result.
“Young’s discipline was poor at times, the communication lacking and the execution of set pieces was terrible,” Botham said. “We played the game at their pace rather than our own and this cost us dearly.”
Best for Young were Jack Mullany (3), Brent Shoard (2) and James Maloney (1). (M Stallard try, T Copeland try, D Philpot try, J Schiller try and T Copeland 4 conv.)
The Young Yabbies will now turn their focus towards their next match when they take on Cooma at Cooma.
