More than 60 percent of home fires occur between May and September so Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters are reminding residents to take the risk of a fire breaking out in their home seriously.
Young Fire and Rescue NSW captain Ryan Terry said winter holds significant risks within the home.
“When it’s cold residents light up their fireplace and dust off old heaters and electric blankets to keep themselves warm. Don’t put yourself at risk, keep looking when cooking, and do not leave heaters, dryers, electric blankets, or any other electrical device unattended,” he said.
Deputy Captain Matt Dreverman said now is a good time to replace the smoke alarm in your home.
“We’re encouraging residents to replace their outdated alarms with the latest photoelectric smoke alarms, which provide earlier detection and fewer false alarms,” he said.
