YADMA set up an information stall on Saturday March 25 at the Lambing Flat Chinese Festival with the aim to in the hope of attracting new members to its group.
“We sold drinks and held a multiprize raffle,” YADMA publicity officer Maria Hanrahan said. “We welcomed one new member, but also handed out information leaflets and membership forms for some who may be interested in the future.”
The winners of the Lambing Flat Chineses YADMA raffle were first Shannon Gannett, second Wilma O’Brien, third Brenda Walker and fourth Shirley Briggs.
“We thank our members for donating three of these prizes,” Maria said.
YADMA monthly meeting on April 11 Women’s Health Nurse Cathy Kerr gave an informal speech on her role, the services offered especially to culturally diverse women, new developments, and the need for women to take care of themselves.
“It was agreed that many women are so busy caring for family and others that they neglect the preventative health screenings for themselves,” Maria said.
“Cathy was able to explain how to contact services in Young and surrounding towns, as some of our members travel from Cootamundra, Cowra and Temora.”
The group are planning a Mother’s Day celebration with team games and sharing of ethnic foods for the next social gathering on Saturday May 13 at 11.30 at Young North Public School. The group has said all are welcome to attend.
Four YADMA members will be volunteering again this coming term for culture sharing with Young North Public School students as part of its school program.
Future activities will be Christmas in July, a bus trip in October, and the date has been set for the End of Year Multicultural Celebration – November 4.
YADMA outgoing Secretary Helenie Carmody will be recognised for her commitment and dedication to the group since its formation over six years ago, with a lunch on May 1.
“The Secretary role is huge and we are fortunate to have Lina Brown from Stockinbingal as 2017 secretary,” Maria said.
The group welcomes all interested to share friendship, global culture, and authentic food at its social gatherings, encourage new members to join and be part of planning at the monthly meetings held from February to November, on the second Tuesday of the month at Young Town Hall’s Maimaru Room from 2 pm.
