The Young high schools invite parents, caregivers, students and interested community members to join the presentation to be given by the New South Wales Police Schools Liaison Officer.
The event will be held on Tuesday May 2 and will start from 7 pm with tea and coffee provided for those in attendance.
“It is important the message is out there in the community,” Hennessy Catholic College teacher Brett Cowan said.
“The Australian Government recognises student wellbeing and safety are essential for academic and social development,” the Department of Education and Training website states.
The Department of Education and Training believes all students should be able to learn and develop in safe, supportive and respectful environments.
The NSW Police website said as the number of people using mobile phones, Wi-Fi, computer game consoles and other devices to access the internet increases, the need for better cyber security across these devices becomes increasingly important.
“As a parent, you wouldn't think of leaving your children alone in a strange neighbourhood, allowing them to stroll through an adult bookstore or let them wander aimlessly on a busy street or highway,” NSW Police said.
“Similarly, no responsible parent would permit their child to have secret meetings with strangers.”
“Parents need to be involved with their children's Internet experience, teaching children how to handle themselves on the internet is important,” the NSW Police website said.
For the past several years NSW Police have worked with schools in the state to educate children from infants to high school on the importance of staying safe while online.
The NSW Police programs not only help to educate children but parents on how they should approach children when discussing the need to be vigilant and how to stay safe when online or using products linked to the internet.
Children safety is an important factor for all parents and in modern times where everything from information to communication is based around the internet it is more important than ever to learn how to educate carers as well as students.
