First grade
On Sunday the Cherrypickers made the trek down to Tumbarumba to take on the Greens walking away from the game with a victory 20-16.
The game started at a fast pace and it wasn't until well into the first half points were on the board with Young crossing the line first. Through a lack of completions on Young's behalf it was Tumba to score the next points going into half time leading 6-4. Young came out in second half and couldn't manage to hold on to the ball which saw Tumba post another two tries which put the greens into a considerable lead 16-4 with only 15 mins remaining in the game.
To Young's credit they responded well and after gaining some possession managed to score three tries which wrapped up the game 20-16. Young's best on the day was Mitch Ryan, Will Scott and Kyle Richens. The team is looking forward to taking on Temora at home on Sunday.
Reserve Grade
Young reserve grade also traveled to Tumbarumba on Sunday and came away with a massive win 40-20.
Always a hard game playing the mountain boys at home, and true to form Tumba threw a lot at the Young side in both attack and defence. Young started well with a try to Nic Schiller in the first few minutes and a few plays latter Matt Murray scored and converted. From then on Young seemed to go into cruise mode and through some ordinary defence allowed Tumba back in to the game.
Matt Murray was instrumental in the revival after half time and with the help of Jacob Hardy playing in the unfamiliar role of five eight managed to steer the team around, create more structure in attack, and eventually take control of the game.
The three points went to the ever reliable Matt Murray who after the weekend now leads the group in points scored. Jacob Hardy got the two points, and looks as though he has what it takes to push for that five eight spot. While Casey Wall, the groups leading try scorer, got the one point.
The three were backed up by some great work in the forwards with the likes of Nathan Hill having his best game of the season so far, Alex Slavin and Steve Hiku continually causing problems up the middle, and new recruit Big Wais impressed with some bone jarring runs through the defence.
In the back line Young’s best were Mick Goonan, who scored a great try in the corner, Riley Manwearing, Brady Lestrange and Nicholas Schiller. Special mention must be made to group nines oldest player Steve Woolford, who at 50 years of age, through down the walking frame and took the field and even produced a try saving ball and all tackle on young’s line.
Young reserve grade have no problem scoring points, but defence has become an issue and is something that has to be addressed before we meet some of the higher ranking sides. All in all it was pleasing to come away with the two points and will be looking forward to meeting Temora at Alfred Oval this Sunday.
