The Saints fought hard after being thrashed in its previous two outings and with a quarter to play just three points separated the teams.

But a five-goal final quarter from the Rebels secured them the victory 17-9-111 to 11-16-82.

Saints coach Brad McKinnon said the loss was hard to take.

“It was a tough loss because we were in the contest at three-quarter time after a very solid start, to be only down by three points,” he said.

“It was a much-improved effort by the Saints against the undefeated Rebels, and we showed that we have the ability to start winning games if we keep playing that brand of football.”

Rebels coach Steve Grundy said he was nervous going into the final term.

“We were a bit complacent; Young turned up to play, they threw everything at us. They pushed us, and we were lucky to win,” he said.

McKinnon said although he was disappointed to lose he was happy with how the Saints played on the day. 

“The game showed that we have the potential to push the top teams, but consistency is now key,” he said.

“We have set a standard now, and we must now maintain and improve that level of consistency.” 

McKinnon said the Saints played well as a team but did have some standout performances on the day.

“Justin Kelly had a best on ground performance, he set up many plays from centre half-back and was closely followed by Ethne Cummins who played very well in the ruck and went forward to kick a couple of goals,” he said.

“Brandt Riley finished the game with four majors, and Kai Frame and Anthony Mortimer were the other notable performances during the game.

“This week we are on the road for the first time of the year against Orange, and it’s a must-win game for the club,” he said.
