Following last week’s win over Cooma it was a vastly different result for Yabbies first grade side when it faced Goulburn Dirty Reds last Saturday.
The Yabbies side were sorely depleted by player injury and unavailability and as a result Young were outclassed by a highly focused and motivated Dirty Reds side who were celebrating 145-years of rugby in Goulburn, to the tune of 59-5.
The Dirty Reds also had the added motivation of ex-Goulburn and former Wallaby star, Simon Poidevin to cheer them on.
Goulburn came out onto the field in a hungry mood and quickly declared its intent to run the ball by scoring three unanswered tries in the first 15 minutes.
Three looked like it might turn to four but thanks to Yabbies fullback James Maloney’s one-on-one try saving tackle the Dirty Reds didn’t get through.
Unfortunately for the Yabbies Maloney and Dave Crowley were both sidelined due to injuries early in the match which only added to the Young side woes.
The Yabbies failed to hold the ball for the first 20 minutes of the game but finally held possession through good forward pressure with Charlie Bryant managing to score out wide.
Bryant’s try lit a fire in the Yabbies side putting them into attack but unfortunately the Young team were on the wrong end of a number of calls from the referee which ended up with Goulburn being handed back the ball and going on to score another two tries.
Goulburn lead at the bell 35-5.
The Yabbies started the second-half on the attack but a solid Goulburn defence nipped any Young hopes of a try in the first 15 minutes before the Dirty Reds breakaway got the ball and scored.
Young kept up the pressure but good attacking moves broke down with some poor options and strong Goulburn tackling.
A rampaging Goulburn fullback twice ran wide and outpaced the Yabbies outside backs to score before a neat kick ahead by their five-eighth saw their winger regather and score the final try to win 59-5
The local side were well beaten and with some players backing up from second grade the team never gave up and pushed Goulburn all the way to the final whistle.
Best for Young was Phil Charles on three points, Brendan Shoard for two points and Ben Simmons with one.
Simmons was also named Player’s Player for the match.
(C. Bryant one try)
Young will travel to Tuggeranong next weekend to take on the ACT side.
