At the start of the race Cobra Benelong became unbalanced and fell dislodging both Barnes and Nathan Turnbull from their gigs. Turnbull was cleared to drive but Barnes was taken to hospital for further assessment.
Race one was taken out by the Rodney Crowe trained pacer So Kool Master driven by Blake Jones. The four-year-old gelding ran home in 29.1 to defeat Smooth Mace and Chivas Shark with a mile rating of 2:02.6 to his credit.
Race two was won by John O’Shea and Gregs Legacy despite being under threat by the race favourite during the final lap. The mile rating of 1:58.7 and a final quarter of 29.8 was a good effort for the winner.
Race three was an exciting race with local trainer Josh Powderly praising Todd Day’s driving in ensuring Thanku Thanku the win. Day out drove the Cowra trained Taylor Khan and Alisons Jet. The five-year-old gelding rated a creditable 1:59.2 for the 1720m event following a first quarter sprint of 29.1 by the early pacemaker.
Race four was also taken out by John O’Shea and Our Braxton in a polished display behind the five-year-old. O’Shea beat out the favourite Smithstars Lexus driven by Amanda Turnbull by a neck with a mile rating of 1:56.9 which was just outside the record set by Audrey Maree of 1:56.0 set on May 15, 2015.
Race five finished in a close but convincing win for local couple Seryn Adams and Luke Primmer with the Dapto trained Mangochillilime driven by Adams. The mile rating of 2:02.2 was a pleasant surprise for his connections who have now the satisfaction of having a first start winner in their stables.
Race six was won by a three metre margin when Mah Koo Loo Frankie beat out Just Milhouse and Bonnybobbyshaftoe. The Peter Sykes trained mare scored her second win in 16 starts.
Race seven was rescheduled after the Barnes accident with Anakena beating out Gunna Collect from Bathurst and Rocknroll Idol. The final two quarters of 29.6 and 29.3 staved off a late challenge and rated 2:01.6 for the journey.
Race eight was run in very cold conditions and taken out by the Junee trained Ace In Our Pocket. The Bruce Harpley driven filly beat out Lifes A Jungle for Bernie Hewitt and Chill and Burn driven by Luke Primmer
The combination of Primmer and Adams will be a great asset to the local harness racing community as soon as their acquisition is finalised. We welcome them and hope their future is more than fruitful in the Cherry Capital in more ways than one.
Young will race again on the night of Friday June 16.
