In his first appearance on the bench Magistrate O’Brien sat on the Moree and Inverell circuit in the north west of New South Wales.
As a child Magistrate O’Brien lived in Canada before his family moved to Australia when Magistrate O’Brien was a boy.
Magistrate O’Brien had a successful career as a solicitor before he became a Magistrate and during his first sitting in Young Local Court showed a stern but fair standing towards defendants appearing.
During the morning recess a morning tea celebration was held where Magistrate O’Brien was introduced to local lawyers, solicitors, police officers and others who work within the law.
Magistrate O’Brien spoke eloquently about his enthusiasm for the law and how happy he was to be assigned to the local circuit.
