Under 7s White
It was a powerful, full strength team which charged onto the frost bitten turf in Griffith on Sunday. We played the Leeton Phantoms in the first game and the Albury Steamers in the second game. We had some great performances again from Jack Shea, Cooper Hewitt and Charlie Lane. Girl power was a real highlight this week with Sarah ‘don’t be fooled by the pink gear’ Webber and Georgie ‘don’t underestimate my speed’ Scott having fine performances. However, the stand out player was Billy Riley who scored some great tries and his enthusiasm and desire was inspiring for the team. Well done team. We are looking forward to our Gala day in Young.

Under 8s
In our first game against Hay the boys kept them at bay scoring 27 unanswered points against a very tough side. Straight up and in their territory Jack Dowling crossed several times. Making metres on either side of the field and out-stepping his defence in the centre of the field saw Will Stoney play a terrific game. Darcy Woodward stepped up this week and made some fantastic tackles stopping them in their tracks, backed up by some strong steps forward in attack. A great win to start the day. After sausage rolls and sauce, the boys came back to the field against the West Wyalong Pirates. A tougher opponent saw our boys digging a little deeper in both attack and defence. Henry Hewson showed he was a force to be reckoned with as he took the ball into attack with force and determination making some great metres. Max Schilt and his handy ball skills gave us some extra time after some sneaky steals and Max was rewarded with a try for his hard work in running forward, showing the boys no fear in going head to head with his opposition. With many tries next to his name, Hugo Davidson had white line fever. As a team, the boys played some terrific rugby making for some rather exciting junior rugby viewing.

Under 10s - Greens
The Green Yabbies were in for a tough day when they played the two Wagga teams at Griffith last Sunday on bigger fields in sunny conditions and down three players. Although outnumbered they weren’t outclassed as they tackled like machines and threw the ball around for some very entertaining rugby. Toby Dowling, Sam Schilt and Josh Cameron all scored a hat trick of tries and they were backed up by Trent Shean with a double and Nate Reid to run out convincing 60-12 winners. They were dealt a huge blow when Riley Butcher left the field injured. Inspiration came from Nate Reid’s commitment, Dean Starling’s amazing defence, Trent Shean’s darting runs, Max Shea’s involvement, Toby Dowling’s great cover tackles, Sam Schilt’s blistering speed in defence and attack, and Josh Cameron’s amazing six tries. The Yabbies won 45-15.

Under 10s – White
The Under 10s White were missing a couple of their big guns however the team weren’t deterred to step up and show just how tough they can be. First game was up against Tumut were Cal Hewitt directed his team around the ground well and scored a classy try along the way. Half time had the score relatively even until the pace of Jackson Riley clicked in and the Yabbies ran away 55-20 winners. Second game was against the undefeated Leeton side. Right from the opening whistle the Yabbies showed great support and recycled the ball at a high level due to Cal Holt continuing to clean up the opposition at the breakdown. With Leeton known for their big men, Drew Edwards and Olly Burgess were brutal defence, closing down the opposition attack at every chance. Jesse Jewitt was the standout for the day strong running attack and relentless defence which contributed to a fantastic 35-30 win for this mighty team. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with Matt and Lucinda Burgess and the Hall family at this sad time.

Under 12s
The Under 12 Yabbies traveled to Griffith last Sunday to take on Albury and Griffith on a fine winter’s day. The first game against Albury was a pleasure to watch, with the Yabbies having the perfect start by scoring a try of the kick off with a good forward ruck and quick hands all the way along the back line out to the winger to score a great team try. They played really well for the next 15 minutes with strong forward play, solid defence and quick hands. They let Albury back into the game just before and after half time, but kicked into gear in the last 15 minutes to post their best game so far and a comfortable win. Their second game started slowly as the boys had too many pies between games and it took them 20 minutes to switch into game mode. When they did, they dominated all facets of play, with some outstanding forward defence shutting down an aggressive Griffith team. Some good backline passing and running saw the boys score plenty of points out wide with some equally impressive conversions securing a 48-0 win. They are starting to gel and play more as a team which is the key to their success, and with a little more work on their defensive patterns and commitment to the tackle, they will continue to succeed and play great rugby.

Under 14s
The Under 14’s weren’t intimidated by the top of the ladder West Wyalong side when forward John Cass showed great sportsmanship and went to play for West Wyalong as they were down a player. Young showed great grit and determination and where the first to find the try line. Finn Martin who was referee tried hard to keep up with his son but Will just burnt him off. Late in the second half West Wyalong made a comeback and found the try line twice. Harry Nuthall hit back and scored a brilliant try in the corner to see Young take away the win. All the boys played well with Sam Smith receiving 3 points, Harry Nuthall 2 points and Adrian Waru 1 point. Final score 41-17. The second game was Leeton who scored within the opening minutes. The boys dug deep and with some great defensive work held Leeton to one try. The boys after a tough fight finally found the try line through Matty Noakes to draw even. Both sides played hard and where evenly matched. After a close game and one which looked like it was going to end in a draw, Will Martin supported by the forwards pushed hard to find the try line and place Young in front. The boys held out a very determined Leeton team to win the game. The boys played extremely well in a very hard-fought game. Players points went to Will Martin 3, Sam Smith 2, and two very hardworking forwards who displayed great sportsmanship Jacob Maslin and John Cass scored 1 point each.
VIVA Under 13s – Green
With Coach Baldwin away Tayls and Jill had big shoes to fill. Young Green arrived at Griffith undefeated and we are happy to report we left after two very successful games still undefeated. Warmed up and ready for the first game of the day the girls were pumped until they saw the size of the Wagga girls but size meant nothing. Young Greens skill and fitness won them the game. Captained by Milly Lane the girls came out on top 9 tries to 1. Tries were scored by Milly Lane (4), Cleo Baldwin (3), Lydia Martin (1) and Sarah MacDonald (1). With half an hour break the girls ran on for their second game of the day against Griffith. With the home ground advantage Young Green didn’t let this deter them. Within 3 minutes Tay Butcher got a break and the girls scored their first try. Jess Taylor captained the team to a 6 try to 1 victory. Try scores included Cleo Baldwin (3), Milly Lane (2) and Lydia Martin (1).
VIVA Under 13s – White
Johnny had the Young Whites prepped well and in great form for their first game against Leeton. Their team work and skill was rewarded with 15 tries and Leeton only scoring 1. Amaya Shipp captained the girls and also gained 4 tries for the game. Other try scores included Bridie Sullivan (4), Isabel Duke (2), Ella Cross (2), Grace Stoney (2), and Jasmine Sullivan (1). Their second game against Albury was a very close one. Playing on a smaller field made it hard for the girls to get a break and unfortunately lost 4 tries to 3. Captain Isabel Duke did a great job with team mates Amaya Shipp, Jasmine Sullivan and Ella Cross scoring a try each. Great effort girls under tough circumstances.
- Jill Baldwin
VIVA Under 16s
The Young Yabbies U16 girls traveled to Griffith a little short on numbers but were ready to play with plenty of spirit. The girls’ first match was against Leeton who quickly showed that they were a much improved side to the one beaten by the Yabbies in round 1. From the outset, the pace of the game was very fast and the girls took a little time to get into the rhythm of the match and found themselves behind 4 tries to 1 by the half-time break. By this time, however, the girls were starting to play a more expansive game and were starting to trouble the Leeton defences. With this improved attack came more scoring opportunities and by the end of the match the Yabbies had scored 6 tries with Ella McRae, Grace Shannon, Joy Cass and Heidi Waddell all contributing to the Yabbies scoreboard. This was not enough, however to get over Leeton on the day who would eventually win a very entertaining match by 40-30. Next were the host team Griffith and the Yabbies were able to start where they left off in the previous game with great organizing play by Annabelle Hudson, Sophie Davidson and Charlotte Hudson finding space down the right wing for a flying Georgia Richens to score a double which was just reward for a great day’s effort by Georgia. Ella McRae and Joy Cass were also able to get across the line to help the Yabbies to a satisfying 25-10 victory. Joy Cass had a watershed day in Griffith scoring an incredible tally of five tries.
