The Young Salvation Army’s Geek Out convention was a resounding success last weekend.
Young Salvation Army spokeswoman Lesley Newton said the Geek Out Convention was a popular culture event like those held in Sydney, just on a smaller scale.
“There was a costume contest with prizes for first place winners, convention panels and vendors that sold all the favourite geeky stuff,” she said.
“Triple J Unearthed chart topper Meri Amber, a geek pop singer-songwriter from Sydney, performed.
“It was great to have someone of Meri’s calibre in Young as she was also at the Oz Comic-Con, Supanova and AMC, as well as supporting The Doubleclicks and doing pre-show foyer entertainment for the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular, Pink, Lady Gaga, Russell Brand and the Flight Of The Conchords.”
Ms Newton said the Geek Out Convention was a rare occasion where the Salvation Army weren't raising money.
The day was just for the community to get together and hang out,” she said.
“We like to do fun things for the town, we cant be serious all time.”
