Young’s families are being urged to have their children’s car seats checked for free by Roads and Maritime Services (RMS).

A NSW road safety initiative, the free child car seat safety check aims to educate families about how to correctly fit a car seat and offers free checks to ensure their seats are not a risk to their child.

It will be held on Thursday, June 22, from 9am to noon at Harden Geelan Holden, 30 Boorowa Street, Young.

The free check by qualified specialists will assess the safety and fit of the child car seats.

An unrestrained child can sustain serious injuries in a crash, or even sudden braking, if a restraint is incorrectly fitted. Research shows that two out of three child restraints are not being used properly.

Common issues include loose straps and bolts, and incorrectly fitted clips and restraints.

Information will be available about the national child restraint laws and the types of restraints approved for use in Australia.

Advice on moving children from one restraint type to the next will also be available.
