The government will on Monday announce the list of projects- which range from new and redeveloped schools to extra classroom space, halls and libraries - to be funded in Tuesday's state budget.

The government says 27 schools will be built in Sydney growth areas including Catherine Field, Marsden Park, Leppington and North Kellyville as well as in Penrith, Liverpool, Sydney Olympic Park, Ryde, Wagga Wagga, and Warnervale on the Central Coast.

The budget will commit $2.2 billion over five years in new money to 123 new school infrastructure projects, which will commence during the next two years to create 32,000 more student places and 1500 new classrooms across the state.

Combined with a commitment in last year's budget to spend $2.6 billion on education infrastructure until 2019-20, the new funding brings total spending on new and upgraded schools to $4.2 billion to 2020-21. This includes completion of a further 33 existing projects over the next four years.

The projects are in addition to those previously announced, including Ballina High, the high-rise Arthur Phillip High School in Parramatta, and the high rise Inner Sydney high school in Surry Hills.

The funding is part of a $5 billion plan reported by Fairfax Media in April to meet an unprecedented explosion in student numbers over the next 15 years.

The plan includes the creation of a new unit, School Infrastructure NSW, which will report to education secretary Mark Scott.

A blueprint prepared by the state government said by 2031 the number of students in NSW government schools would jump by 21 per cent on 2016 levels, of which 80 per cent would occur in Sydney.

This represented 96,500 extra primary students and 67,500 extra secondary students.

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the projects were part of a long-term commitment to ensure NSW schools could cope.

"This historic investment means the children of NSW will have access to world-class education in world-class facilities for decades to come," he said.

Education Minister Rob Stokes said: "Providing the schools to cater for the next generation of NSW students is a big task, but it's a wonderful challenge to have."

The announcement comes after Fairfax Media on Saturday revealed that at least 10 local government areas in Sydney, already struggling to keep up with surging school enrolments, were now facing a boom in their high school-age population.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the government was already building infrastructure, including roads and public transport, and it was "time for a huge investment in the social infrastructure we need, including schools".

On Sunday Ms Berejiklian announced the budget would contain an extra $191 million for facilities at Concord Hospital, on top of the $150 million committed in 2015.

The facilities include a new cancer centre, extra inpatient capacity, and a Defence Force Centre of Excellence that would provide services for defence staff and their families.
