The 2017-2018 NSW Budget will allocate $4 million over four years to assist sporting clubs purchase and maintain Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs).
Young Sports Advisory Council President Ben Cooper said they had identified Defibrillators as an important piece of equipment that local sporting precincts should have.
"We have discussed how sporting organisations might be able to work together to get the defib units," he said.
"We welcome the funding announcement and the more of the units we can get into local sporting grounds the less danger both participants and spectators will be.
"With the ageing of our population it is the not just the participants we have to worry about it is the spectators as well and clubs do have a duty of care to provide as safe an environment as possible."
Mr Cooper said Young is lucky to have two definitive sporting precincts, so the placement of the Defibrillators is important.
"We have both north the south precincts which facilitate the sporting community working together, so we need to find the best way to strategically place the units for the maximum community benefit," he said. "The local ambos do such a good job in supporting sporting clubs, so it would be great to have another link in the armour of our safety network."
Cootamundra MP Katrina Hodgkinson said she hopes the initiative is taken up by clubs in the Young district.
“Some form of cardiac arrest is experienced by up to 33,000 people in Australia every year. Survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest decrease each minute defibrillation is delayed,” she said.
“However, early access to CPR and defibrillation can influence survival by up to 75 percent, so this is this is a wonderful initiative by the NSW Government.”
Applications from clubs will be invited from October this year through the NSW Office of Sport’s website www.sport.nsw.gov.au
